Archaeological Society of Jamaica

WELCOME! BIENVENIDO! BIENVENU!

On behalf on the Executive and members of the Archaeological Society of Jamaica (ASJ), I extend a warm Jamaican welcome to you.

The year 2007 is very important, not only in the British Caribbean but globally as it marks the bi-centennial of the Abolition of the Atlantic Slave Trade. The inception of the Atlantic Slave Trade, its abolition and the eventual Emancipation of Slavery are very important events in the history, culture and identity of the peoples of the Caribbean. The events associated with slavery and colonialism in Jamaica has resulted in a multi-ethnic and cultural society epitomised by the Jamaican motto “Out of Many, One People!” As such the ASJ has sought to recognise the Abolition of the Atlantic Slave Trade in the staging of the sixth World Archaeological Congress.

The ASJ is honoured to be the host of the WAC-6 Congress. Although the WAC-6 Congress is being hosted in Jamaica and the motto of the ASJ is to research, preserve and promote Jamaica’s Archaeological Heritage. The Congress is a wonderful opportunity for promoting not only Jamaican, but Caribbean Archaeology and Culture. The ASJ has garnered support from a wide cross section of Jamaican and Caribbean Cultural Agencies in the staging of this event and via this united effort we guarantee it will be a WAC Congress to remember.

Please take the opportunity to explore this website to learn more about the WAC-6 Congress, the Archaeological Society of Jamaica and our beautiful isle – Jamaica.

Looking forward to see you in Kingston in 2007.

Lesley-Gail Atkinson
President
